2011 Garden Recap

The Best and Worst of My 2011 Garden

Much like I did last year, I'm going back through some of the things that went well and not so well in my 2011 garden.

Best -- We grew some first-time crops this year: tomatillos, onions, and broccoli.

Worst -- Never quite got my fall garden started. Never quite got my cold frame up.

Best -- I feel confident saying that we can grow peppers. We even grew new varieties (like cayenne and Purple Beauty) and had good results with them too!

Worst -- Some things didn't work out well. Like these carrots.

My sunflowers didn't do well this year either. Blooms weren't as prolific as last year and didn't last long. I guess weather conditions in my area were just different this year. :(

Best -- YOU--The online community! I've met so many cool gardeners from around in the world and learned more about gardening from interacting with you and reading your blogs. I also feel such a stronger connection to my food now that I grow some of my own. It makes me very excited to keep learning, keep trying new things. I thank all of you for reading and commenting and sharing your garden experiences with me too.

One More Best -- my new garden helper, Cleopatra the adorable Kitten. She is so cute! (Even though she steals cherry tomatoes and hides them throughout the house).

Happy New Year and Best Wishes for 2012!

  1. Glad you had such a great year and hope next year is even better! P.S., I'm a little jealous of those peppers.

  3. Very cute post! And those carrots...too adorable...even though they weren't what you were going for!

  4. Your 'bests' look very good. I'm bad about getting my fall garden started, too. I promise myself every year that I'll be good and start it on time. Well, maybe I will next year! ;) Your cat is adorable. And I agree - the blogging community is the best! (At least the garden bloggers!) Happy New Year!

  5. You're the only person I know who has ever been able to grow tomatillos! Have a Happy New Year!

  6. A cat that hides tomatoes? Very cool! Some of my carrots looked just like yours, while others were a lot bigger. I think the secret is in the thinning. The ones I didn't thin out enough, were microscopic and weird. But the ones I gave more growing room to, were much bigger. Don't give up!! Just try again! I am! Happy new year!

  7. I agree! One of the best gifts of 2011 has been getting to know so many thoughtful and kind gardeners in the blogging community. I'm thankful to have found you and look forward to seeing more of what your garden has in store for 2012. Happy New Year!

  9. Last year I grew tomatoes, carrots, and beets in containers. This year I want to grow a different tomato, carrots, and potatoes. What tomatoes did you grow? I need one that is determinate and doesn't grow to be 6 ft tall. Lavender is easy to grow as long as it gets full sun.

  10. I have veggies, mostly in containers because our house had flower beds from fence post to fence post. I am trying to figure out how to rearrange things to get more room for veggies, while still keeping the wonderful variety of flowers in my yard. I have some likely spots. Maybe I will accomplish that this year.
I love your new kitten. I have three garden cats, but no one who hides cherry tomatoes.

  11. I tried to plant some vegetables and leafy greens in fall. Every time I failed. I stopped trying, and now I use my raised beds for composting. I love your new kitten! We just got a new puppy, German Shepherd. I hope he won't demand so much of my time when garden season starts!
I want to thank you for your comment on my post about killing a forest. One of the worst parts of the story is that that person who did it lives in our neighborhood and used to walk his own dog in that forest. When prices on timber went up he swapped another property for this piece of land with the only purpose - to harvest trees and sell them to China... Thanks again!
