Best and Worst of my Garden -- January 2012

Welcome to the Best and Worst of my garden, January edition. I'm recapping the good and bad things that happened in my garden this month, similar to what I do at the end of the calendar year (my year-end 2011 and 2010 posts, if you'd like to see).

There's not a whole lot going on in the garden this January. I normally alternate Best/Worst listings, but right now I have more bad things to talk about than good things, so let's get the worst out of the way first:
Worst -- I do not like erratic behavior, not in people, animals, or the weather. I think the entire country has had abnormal weather this January. Here in DC we have gone from spring to winter and back to spring, all in 72 hours. It's been happening all month. I'm not sure what this means for the upcoming spring/summer growing season, but I hope we don't have extreme conditions.

Worst -- I realized that I can't grow carrots in containers.

Worst -- My indoor pepper plan didn't quite pan out. But I'm thinking positive--I hope the few pepper plants that I still have pull through, especially my anaheim pepper plant that has been with me for years.

Best-- I ordered some new seeds to try this spring and I can't wait to start them!

What's happening in your garden? If you want to share any hits and misses, frustrations and triumphs, or anything you're dreading or looking forward to, please link up and share!

  1. I will have a post to link in tomorrow. I love how you are trying to grow things indoors. I am only successful with greens and herbs, but at least it some gardening. The crazy weather has been such a strain on the plants...we go from 20s to 40s to 20s with thaw and snow and thaw and lots of rain. We are many feet of snow behind our normal although I do not miss that much snow..wonderful meme

  2. Sorry about your mishaps...hopefully your pepper will hang on...I'm always surprised what I pull out of the garage at the end of the winter and how quickly it recovers! As far as frustrations in my garden - the biggest is the squirrel gnawing on my Japanese maples! Arg...gonna get those little devils!

  3. I knew this was today, but I am joining in tomorrow. I have a surprise for you in my post today! I am awarding you the Versatile Blogger award! You can read more about it at my post here: http://dreamingofroses.blogspot.com/2012/01/1-blooms.html I hope you will accept it and have fun passing it on to others. Congratulations! :)

  4. I'm going to add a post this weekend. :o) I’ve awarded you the Versatile Blogger Award: http://bit.ly/yhCUbI. Yay!!

  5. Hi, I managed to get a post in this month. I hope there is a little more happening in the garden next month.

I've been looking at carrot seeds at the nurseries and thinking there must be a way you can grow them in a container. :)

  6. I hope your special pepper plant survives! I am waiting for a freeze to hit all the flowers that are opening too soon in my garden. I just hope it doesn't mean an early and extra hot summer. I would be happy with an extra long spring!

  7. @Donna--thanks for participating! And I agree about this crazy weather. I'm starting to see bugs appear that shouldn't be around just yet. Hope this doesn't mean bad things for the summer harvest.

@Cat--argh! Don't get me started on squirrels either. They're cute unless they're in MY garden, tearing up my pots and taking my veggies.

@HolleyGarden & Casa Mariposa--oh my goodness, thanks very much!

@GirlSprout--thanks for participating in the meme. And that's funny that you've been looking at carrots too. I think I have a new nemesis to add to my garden un-growable list.

@Deb--that's a lovely way to look at it, an extra long spring. ANd thank you, I hope my peppers recover too, expecially the one I've had for 3 years.

  8. Thanks for hosting! I enjoyed summing up what’s going on currently in my garden. I’ll try to come and post again.

  9. I think our weather is very strange. I don't know what to make of it. I keep hoping we will have a snow day, but with the way things are going I am not sure that will happen. More and more, it seems as if spring is on the way...

I may link up My Garden Notebook to this...seems like it fits...Thanks for hosting...

  10. @Lucy--I'm glad you joined in. Your garden is going to look great this year, can't wait to read about your progress.

@Sage Butterfly--thank you for linking your Garden Notebook. I think it fits quite nicely! And yes, it does seem like spring is here early, so I might as well enjoy it.

  11. I only wish I had things to report in the garden. Many perennials are oddly green and the roses finally had all the buds drop. I agree, weather has been a bear all winter, but in the opposite kind of way. Plants are heaving with the fluctuation too.

  12. Hi BL - I don't have much in the way of fun stuff happening in my garden. Just lots of casualties. Your meme gave me a platform to have a good old winge about it all :). Thanks for Hosting.

  13. Your poor pepper plants - I hope some make it! I am having way too much fun with buying seeds and winter sowing and such - though who knows what's going to happen with this crazy weather!
    Thanks for hosting!
